The number of photographic images in online image databases from the holdings of image archives and libraries as well as from museum collections is growing rapidly. What value do the countless photographs that are available online have today for archives and museums, for experts and the general public?
The project “Fifties in Europe Kaleidoscope”, co-funded by the CEF of the European Union, dealt with precisely this question. Using the example of digitised photographs from the 1950s, the project partners investigated challenges and opportunities in relation to the development and implementation of innovative methods such as crowdsourcing, co-creation, storytelling and the research of image material in online databases supported by artificial intelligence.
