Storytelling, presence and gamification are three basic fields that need to be taken into account when developing novel mixed reality applications for cultural heritage, based on the recent renaissance of commercial VR and AR hardware. In this survey paper, the role of Storytelling, Presence and Gamification fields in cultural heritage is described. These fields are essential for the development of a Virtual Museum application, in order for the users to have an interesting and fun experience when they use it. The ways that each one of these fields can be integrated in a Virtual Museum application are described in this survey paper. Some examples of such applications are given as well. Finally, a survey of recent MR methods for Virtual Museums is presented. For each method, the possible use of Storytelling or Gamification fields is highlighted alongside with interaction, tracking and the immersion of each method and installation and whether it has to do with intangible heritage.
