Making available 3D object data, developing new tools and technologies, as well as documenting endangered cultural heritage from archaeological sites in Syria and Iraq are just three of the core objectives of ‘Zedikum’ – a German-based 3D digitization project by the State Museums of Berlin.
More than one million archaeological treasures from 12 millennia are displayed and stored on the Berlin Museum Island (Museumsinsel, SMB-SPK). It is one of the richest repositories for culture heritage objects worldwide. A so called structured light 3D scanner helps to accurately document these archaeological objects and even reveal hitherto unknown facts about them. 3D models and data collected during the scanning processes are made available to researchers and archaeologists. Moreover, 3D models can be used to develop new educational concepts. Virtual reality elements can enrich current displays and multimedia presentations in the Berlin State Museums.
