Francesco Walker, cognitive psychologist & his colleagues at VU University Amsterdam, used eye-tracking techniques to children (ages 11-12) and 12 adults to investigate the areas of focus while observing five Van Gogh paintings.
Participants saw each painting twice, before and after hearing a description of the art. An explanatory video can be found here.
